Do you know how to....

...build a rocket ship out of styrofoam cups?

...make spiritual tea?

...solve pi?

...decorate your door and living area with toilet paper?

...instruct others how to play catch a ball yet being unable to catch one yourself?

...take Spanish I and IV at the same time?

...avoid "catching" cancer from your common, everyday hug?

Me neither. But clients at work do. Jealous?? You should be.

Funny Things Patients Say...

We had one patient that was adamantly explaining that Rod Stewart is Martha Stewart's nephew.

Another patient was watching the Today Show. They come back from commercial and pan at the crowd standing outside and, of course, the crowd waves at the camera. What does patient do? She waves back at the TV with a huge grin on her face, thinking they are waving at her. Awesome.

I was talking with two patients when one interrupts me and states, "Do you EVER, (at this point the other one chimes in and they state in unison) brush your hair?" Apparently, they think my curls are just tangles. :)

Whew. They sure do know how to keep you on your toes!

Patients are SO odd..

So this isn't funny as much as just plain ODD.

During exercise group the other morning I was doing small talk with my patients, asking them how they slept and how the previous evening went for them. Somehow we got on the topic of Camden.

This one particular patient was asking me how my baby was doing and what he was seeing. I said he was really enjoying looking at reds and oranges on peoples' clothing or on the wall, and he is really noticing his hands.

She responded by saying "if your baby is putting together oranges and blues, he is working on fractals. Do you know what fractals are? They are very complex arithmetic equations. Those tiny humans are SO smart."

Riiiiight. What do you say to that??

On Racism

So, one of the favorite kooky patients has been back since I have returned to work from maternity leave.

She came to my exercise group yesterday wearing a brown sock and brown shoe on one foot, and one white sock and white shoe on the other. Keep in mind, she does not have dementia like a lot of the other patients, so she was well aware of what she was doing.

So I asked her, "What happened to your shoes?"

To which she replied, "I am taking a stand against racism", as she proudly displayed both feet to the group saying, "One brown one, and one white one".

I was feeling a bit ornery at this point, so I asked her which shoe she likes better. Ha! :) That one stumped her for a moment, before I jumped in and said "Now, that would defeat the purpose wouldn't it?" The look on her face was priceless as she was trying to decide if she should pick a favorite shoe or not.

I tell you what, its moments like this that remind me why I do what I do.
